McAllen Residents Express Concerns Over Proposed ICE Facility

In recent weeks, McAllen residents have raised significant concerns regarding the potential establishment of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility within the city. During a city commission meeting on April 13, 2026, community members urged officials to oppose the facility and provide greater transparency on the matter.

Alexis Saenz, a local resident, addressed the commissioners, stating, “I want to continue being proud of all that my city does for our community, but for that, we need transparency and we need communication.” Saenz emphasized the importance of rejecting public funding and approvals for ICE operations within McAllen.

The proposed facility is reportedly a warehouse located in an industrial park near the Anzalduas International Bridge. However, details about ICE’s plans remain limited. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has not provided specific information, and city officials, including Mayor Javier Villalobos, have indicated they have not been contacted regarding the facility.

Community organizations, such as the For the People Alliance, have been instrumental in mobilizing residents to voice their concerns. Co-founder Isaac Amani Newman highlighted the need for public discourse, stating, “We need to know where our city leaders even stand on this to begin with.”

In response to the public comments, City Commissioner Rudy Castillo expressed support for adding the issue to the commission’s agenda for further discussion, acknowledging the importance of community input in decision-making processes.

As the situation develops, McAllen residents continue to advocate for transparency and active participation in decisions that impact their community.
