McAllen Residents Oppose Proposed ICE Detention Facility

In recent weeks, McAllen residents have voiced significant concerns over the potential establishment of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility within the city. During a city commission meeting on April 13, 2026, community members urged local officials to oppose the facility and called for greater transparency regarding its development.

Alexis Saenz, a McAllen resident, addressed the commissioners, stating, “I want to continue being proud of all that my city does for our community, but for that, we need transparency and we need communication.” Saenz demanded that the city reject public funding, approvals, and local resources for ICE.

The proposed facility is reportedly planned for a warehouse located in an industrial park within McAllen’s trade corridor, less than five miles from the Anzalduas International Bridge. This location was included in a list of potential sites that circulated online in February.

Similar opposition has been observed in other Texas communities. In February, a Dallas-area facility was identified as a potential site for an ICE detention center. The facility’s owner, Majestic Realty Co., confirmed contact regarding the potential sale but stated it had not and would not enter into any agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for the use of the building as a detention facility.

As of late March, the Department of Homeland Security paused the purchase of warehouses for detention facilities as part of a review of contracts signed under former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. Despite this pause, McAllen residents remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and transparency in decisions that impact the city’s future.
